FASHION: Glamorous gowns that showed off a bit more of an edgy side this season with pieces of frayed fabric sneaking out underneath embellished tulle skirts. The pamphlet described the looks as inspired by “Miss Havisham’s endless plight of lost love with an ethereal soiree of shredded fabrics and embellishments in shades of blush, porcelain, smoked sky and fiery red.” Inspired by the wealthy spinster from Great Expectations, we can expect to see many of the gowns on the red carpet at the Oscars. One of our favorite designs included a platinum beaded dress over a sheer fabric with a flowing tulle skirt and decadent shoulders. Another was a white corset strapless gown with crystals and white feathers sewn in.

BEAUTY: Faces had rosy lips and slightly dark eyes. Hair was a sleek parted low bun blown out into fro-like frizzy waves. Makeup by Talia Shobrook for Le Metier De Beaute and hair by Renato Campora for Frederic Fekkai.

COLOR/OVERHEARD: Designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig were waiting towards the back of the show room while Georgina’s husband, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, wandered the room. He bumped into Michelle Trachtenberg who was eager to chat him up. Ashanti arrived in a purple strapless dress and despite the cold temperature was not about to let a coat ruin a good picture and removed it before she got half way out of the car in case there were any photographers outside.

Marchesa’s show is always more of an art exhibit than a fashion collection. The dresses are incredibly intricate and stunning. Getting to ogle the designs up close is truly the best way to appreciate the detail. However, while it may be enjoyable for the viewers, the models seemed miserable. One nearly fainted and needed to be removed from the pedestal stand, while most others nibbled on M&Ms, nuts and sipped juice and water that assistants were passing around. The collection was only an hour long but the Christian Louboutin shoes were too painful for most to stand in. One model complained of a foot cramp while others needed help adjusting their feet on the pedestal. Granted, it was the second to last day of fashion week, but the fashion art exhibit turned into quite a spectacle.
