Caddyshack 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray – The ageless 1980 golf comedy doesn’t get any funnier in HD, but the movie is definitely one well worth owning, and this newest release is the most thorough update yet. Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray make up an unstoppable cast in this tale of an exclusive, snobbish golf course torn asunder by a gang of screw-ups and a meddlesome gopher. The disc contain outtakes, behind-the-scenes featurettes and an interview with director Harold Ramis.
The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It – A direct-to-DVD, everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink parody in the vein of Scary Movie, the star-less comedy is funnier than it has any right to be as it sends up the recent flood of Judd Apatow-produced or influenced comedies. The making-of featurette is almost as funny as the movie itself.
The Man With No Name Trilogy Blu-ray – Clint Eastwood and director Sergio Leone joined for three of the finest Westerns ever created – A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly – combined to look and sound stunning in this essential set. Extras abound, including commentary tracks from film historians, period radio spots, a look at a botched TV broadcast of A Fistful of Dollars and retrospectives on Leone.
Not the Messiah (He’s a Very Naughty Boy) – Monty Python’s The Life of Brian was adapted into a stage musical filmed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It’s a novel idea but surprisingly dull and flat. This is one that’s strictly for hard-core Monty Python fans. The Blu-ray and DVD include a making-of doc that explains how the disaster came to be.
Shutter Island – Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio continue their wildly successful partnership, this time in a dark psychological thriller set on an island prison for the criminally insane. DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo play federal agents investigating an escapee, but the tables are turned and they seem to become prisoners themselves – and that’s just the first of several twists. The Blu-ray disappointingly lacks a digital copy but at least includes a couple making-of docs.
Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Seventh Season – Larry David’s riotous HBO comedy series comes full-circle in my favorite season yet, in which David, the Seinfeld co-creator, reunites the cast in an effort to win back the affections of his ex-wife (Cheryl Hines). David’s cranky, self-serving act only ripens as he gets older. Extras include interviews with the old Seinfeld cast and a look at Jason Alexander coaching David on how to play George, a character who was based on David.
