John Mayer is not talking about Katy Perry, except to explain why he's not talking about her, of course!

“It was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during and it’s a private relationship, still," the singer tells Ellen DeGeneres on her April 2 show. "I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other.”

Then John offers that he is "much happier" now than when he was with Katy. "I’m on the same journey as everyone else," he explains. "Coupling is a tricky thing.”

So is staying away from the scotch! John reveals that some of his past health problems, like acid reflux, were a direct result of his true love in life.

"I'm getting to that age now where your body just doesn't shake everything off, and it really didn't help that I love-d, love, love scotch," he says. "But it's just like applying poison to your body…It's just delicious wonderful poison that makes you not care how late you're out 'til or where you're going, but I had to really say I like singing and writing more than I like delicious scotch. So I had to really dial it down and I'm a little more boring."

Part of John's boring new lifestyle is living in Montana.

"I go out every other weekend if I can and hang out," he says of his relaxing new home in a small town, where he takes walks, plays fetch with his dog, drinks coffee in the morning and washes his own dishes.
