On The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Simon said shared his thoughts on American Idol’s success since he left.

“I’m thrilled,” he said. “You always want to leave a show, and it does better, right?”

But actually he says its not really doing better without without him.

“No, I think it’s about the same,” he explained. “I’m like that with my friends: do well, just don’t do that well.”

“I haven’t watched the whole show,” he added. “But my mom, who is 86, I think she forgot that I wasn’t on the show this year.”

Once she found out her son is no longer on the show, she had a message for him to deliver to the judges.

“Tell Jennifer [Lopez], the new girl, I like her. Give my love to Randy [Jackson]. And, true story, tell Paula [Abdul] she looks a bit tired.”
