Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to the thriller-drama genre of movie-making. This year in particular, Leo seems to be starring in one “trippy/nightmarish” film after the other. First, Martin Scorsese‘s Shutter Island and now the thriller Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan. So what attracts the Hollywood heartthrob to these roles?
“I’ve been having a lot of fun playing protagonists that you can’t trust,” Leo told MTV News while promoting Inception — co-starring Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page. “That’s been the objective in both these films, is to say lines and not necessarily mean what I say. It’s been a lot of fun, and I’ve got to do it with some pretty talented filmmakers, certainly with Scorsese and now with Chris Nolan.”
Both films deal with the theme of illusion versus reality, however, Leo explains, they are executed very differently.
In Inception, Leo’s character lives in a world where the technology to enter the human mind through dream invasion exists. His character is constantly trying to decipher whether he is in the real world or an altered, make-believe universe.
“They had some similarities in tone, but they couldn’t have been executed any different,” Leo said. “This film is just beyond anything I’ve ever seen or experienced in my life.
“It’s a very rare occurrence where you can do a movie that exists on four different planes simultaneously,” he added. “That was the immediate intrigue: delving into the world of the subconscious with Chris Nolan. What could be more fun?”
