Jacob Lusk honored the memory of his father through his song selection this week on American Idol with the Luther Vandross classic “Dance with My Father.” It took an emotional toll on Jacob as he had a small technical glitch at the beginning of his performance, but managed to pull through.

At the beginning of the song, Jacob stopped singing momentarily, but picked it right back up after he pulled out his earpiece.

In the end, he delivered a emotional and powerful performance.

“It’s hard to perform when a song means that much to you,” Jennifer Lopez said. “That’s one of the tricks to being a performer. But emotionally, it was a beautiful performance.”

“You pulled it through, and your daddy was up there listening to you,” Steven Tyler shard. “And it was a beautiful thing.”

Jacob’s performance had a dual meaning behind it, as it was also Luther’s birthday.
