The San Francisco auditions for American Idol last night were filled with some characters, but also a lot of talent and heart-warming stories like the one James Durbin shared.
When James was just 9 his musician father died of a drug overdose and soon after James was diagnosed with Tourette and Asperger’s syndroms.
But James, 21, met an “angel” Heidi, his now wife, and they have one young child together. Still, the family is struggling as James is unemployed, but hopes to America’s next Idol.
With tears flowing, James sang Muddy Waters’ “You Shook Me” and also sang a little of Steven Tyler‘s “Dream On.”
So what did the judges think?
Tyler said it was “over-the-top” and James’ vocals were “so, so good.”
Randy Jackson and mostly impressed with his range saying, “And that’s full voice, that’s not falsetto or anything.”
“You sing from a very different place than a lot of the people we see,” Jennifer Lopez said. “You sing from where you’re supposed to sing from: from feeling, from heart, from your soul. From the need to feel and make others feel.”
“That’s what my goal is; that’s all I wanna do,” James said and to that he was given the golden ticket to Hollywood!
