After a few days of recess while a court official recovered from an illness, the Oscar Pistorius murder trial is back on. Today, the court heard from two people: a pathologist, and Pistorius himself, whose testimony has been highly anticipated.

The pathologist spoke about the possibility that the slain Reeva Steenkamp would not have had a chance to scream before or during Pistorius' fatal gun shots. Much of the prosecution's argument has rested on the idea that Steenkamp screamed, and thus identified herself, before the shots.

Pistorius took the stand and gave a weepy apology to the Steenkamp family. “I can’t imagine the pain and emptiness and sorrow that I’ve caused your family. I was simply trying to protect Reeva," he whispered, voice breaking. "I can promise you that when she went to bed that night she felt loved." His apology was so broken and quiet that the judge had to ask him to speak up.

He also explained that he has been on multiple medications for his anxiety and depression following Steenkamp's tragic death. "I wake up and I smell blood and I wake up to be terrified. I wake up in a complete state of terror. I would rather not sleep." He spoke of his rough childhood in a rough neighborhood, in which his mother always kept a gun nearby for protection.
