Simone Biles' Coach Called Her Fat — Watch Her Emotional Response
Gold medal winner gymnast Simone Biles was a sensation at the Rio Olympics, but she had to overcome many obstacles along the way — including a fat-shaming coach!
The 19-year-old sat down with Hoda Kotb at the Today show while promoting her new book, Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance. Referencing an excerpt from the tell-all Hoda mentioned a particularly painful moment in the athlete's career, when she had a disappointing meet in 2013. “You overheard a coach say, ‘You know why she crashed? Because she’s too fat — that’s why. How does she expect to compete like that,’” Hoda asked.
“I dismissed myself from the floor so nobody could see me and I walked to the back behind the curtains and I was crying,” Biles admitted.
Then, the team coordinator came to find her, telling her to train harder. "You can’t train like this and let the results show," the woman said.
“I was terrified she was going to be upset with me,” Simone confessed.
