Vanessa Hudgens' Diet and Fitness Secrets!

How the singing, dancing and acting sensation got her best body ever

With her 30th birthday just weeks away, Vanessa Hudgens has never looked or felt better in her life. But the High School Musical alum has admitted that getting the body of her dreams took work.

“I knew it was going to be hard, but I didn’t know how hard,” confessed Vanessa, who committed to dropping the 20 pounds she gained for a role in 2013’s Gimme Shelter by logging hours at the gym and changing her eating habits.

Here, OK! reveals the start’s secrets to slimming down and toning up.

Food For Thought

When it comes to mealtime, Vanessa sticks to the ketogenic diet.

“No carbs. No dairy. No refined sugar. [It’s] eating real foods,” explained the Spring Breakers star of the popular healthy-fat fueled diet. (Kourtney Kardashian, Adriana Lima and Halle Berry are all fans).

“We’ve been trained to think that fats are bad, but they’re so good! [It’s] a source of energy and sustenance that keeps you going through the day.”

So what does the brunette beauty typically reach for when hunger strikes? “I eat a whole avocado a day,” Vanessa’s said, “I need high fats. If I’m not getting enough, my body holds on to calories.”

The rest of her meal plan includes eggs and bacon for breakfast; a salad with dark meat chicken for lunch; almonds for a snack; and grilled salmon or steak with a salad or sautéed veggies for dinner.

She added, “When you’re putting good stuff into your body, you feel so much better.”

Breaking a Sweat

To drop the weight after filming Gimmie Shelter, Vanessa turned to SoulCycle, sometimes taking the spin class twice a day. “Put me on a bike in a room with loud music, and I’m happy,” she said of the cardio workout.

Now that she’s no longer in weight-loss mode, Vanessa tries to squeeze SoulCycle into her schedule whenever she can, along with Pilates, circuit training and other group classes. “I’m really competitive when it comes to fitness, so I like being around people,” she explained.

But one thing the actress always makes time for is yoga, typically hitting the mat three times a week. “I don’t consider it fitness. It’s more like therapy for me,” she’s said.

Clearly, Vanessa’s routine does the mind and body good!

The Keto Credo – Looking to slim down? This low-carb, high-fat diet has you covered.

The key to the Keto diet is all about shifting metabolic gears. The eating plan aims to change your body into relying on a different type of fuel: Instead of a typical high-carb diet where you get energy from glucose, when you switch to a high-fat Keto diet, your body will shift to generating ketones for fuel.

After a few days of eating this way (aim to get about 70 percent of calories from healthy fats, 20 percent from protein and just 10 percent from carbs), your body should reach ketosis – where it’s looking to fat as its primary source of fuel.

So set yourself up for success first thing in the morning. “Kick-start your day with a cup of coffee with SlimFast Keto Creamer and a well-balanced meal like a veggie omelet with avocado,” says Registered Dietitian and SlimFast Plan Consultant Maryann Walsh, noting that a well-balanced meal can help you feel full throughout the day.
