Chris Brown is no stranger to running into the law over the years. And in an exclusive behind-the-scenes feature, Billboard unpacks the R&B singer's disturbing downward spiral that's chock full of drugs, alcohol, and jail time.

According to new interviews with Chris' inner circle, the star dabbled in Xanax, Molly, marijuana, and lean. “You didn’t know how he was going to wake up. Were you going to get cool Chris? Or depressed or artsy and focused Chris, who would be very productive? Or the happy-go-lucky Chris, who would just joke around and have fun? It was a different person every day,” a source told Billboard.

Although his mentally unstable reactions and harsh mood swings affect his friends and coworkers alike, Chris reportedly refuses to change his lifestyle. "He’s not doing the things he needs to do to get well, so he’s never going to be well. The kid is going to hit rock bottom,” an ex member of Brown's inner circle revealed.

And his troubles tend to repeat themselves. Rihanna wasn't the last victim of the "Loyal" singer's physical abuse. In addition to threatening to beat up his former tour manager Nancy Ghosh and telling his cameraman that he'd "knock his a** out," Chris was recently served a restraining order from ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran after he threatened to kill her.

“He will cuss you out and say, ‘Hey, man, I’m functioning. I’m going to get the work out.’ And he does,” a current member of Brown’s team said. “But he’s not the first functional star who thinks they can handle those powerful drugs. I got to say with all my heart, he’s dancing with death.”
