To the millions of American Idol fans watching at home on Wednesday night, the tension on the hit Fox show was all about which of the final nine contestants would fail to make it through to next week. But little did they know that there was a real drama going on in the Idol auditorium, as show medics were rushing to attend to a swooning audience member.

"It was all pretty quick," one eyewitness in the crowd on Wednesday tells OK! about the young female audience member who collapsed into the arms of the man standing behind her during a commercial break. "The medics rushed her out, as they clearly didn't want the cross over into the live broadcast."

According to the witness, the fainting fan was standing in what is commonly referred to on the show as the "mosh pit," that area immediately in front of the stage where people stand during performances.

The incident happened after finalists Ramiele Malubay and Kristy Lee Cook had been given their places on the Bottom Three stools. "The rest of the audience applauded as they walked her out," the witness recalls to OK!. "And the Idol staff rewarded the man who caught her with a copy of the book Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul."

David Cook

The identity of the unfortunate fan has not yet been revealed.

This minor medical emergency comes only a day after finalist David Cook was taken to the hospital after show medics determined his blood pressure was too high. His return to the Idol stage on Wednesday night was cheered on by the audience and he told host Ryan Seacrest that “the whole thing kind of got blown out of proportion. I have high blood pressure, and it spiked, so they took me to the nearest hospital. But I’m cool. I’m not going anywhere.”
