The plot thickens—and gets sadder. News broke yesterday that Joe and Teresa Giudice of Real Housewives of New Jersey were charged on a 39-count indictment with conspiracy to commit fraud and false statements on loan applications, among other items.

The Giudices made their initial appearance in court this morning, and each were released on $500,000 bond. They had to surrender their passports, and are forbidden to travel outside New York or New Jersey. Court papers revealed that Joe is in fact still an Italian citizen, and could face deportation.

The reality couple held hands outside the courtroom and put on a brave face in front of reporters. Teresa released a statement last night: "Today is a most difficult day for our family. I support Joe and, as a wonderful husband and father, I know he wants only the best for our lovely daughters and me. I am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career."
