Having spent time with William and Harry on quite a few occasions, I can say that within the last few months, William has changed. Many of those closest to William tell me the proposal happened because Kate hasn't made any royal mistakes or fallen in any traps.

Kate's family has been focused for years to make sure this engagement would happen. A royal family insider tells me, "Some of Kate's friends and problematic relatives were frozen out of daily contact because they might have cause a risk for Kate becoming the next queen."

Chelsy Davy, Harry's on-and-off girlfriend, told me, "When I was with Harry, I needed to be careful of everything I did and declined even charity invitations."

Chelsy found that hard to do, but Kate followed proper protocol. A friend of Harry says, "As much as William can have extra drinks or become childish, Kate is always in control. He can alwsys rely on her to make sure he is not embarrassed. On occasions when William and his friends had too much fun, Kate showed up and told them not to 'make fools of themselves and not to forget who Williams is!' "

By giving Diana's ring to Kate, William symbolically says she would approve of Kate.

Diana wished the crown would go directly from the queen to William. Kate, by becoming suitable to be Wills' queen, has ultimately revived this scenario.
