With the exception of her breakthrough role in 1997's Selena and her turn opposite George Clooney in 1998's Out of Sight, Jennifer Lopez hasn't exactly been earning applause for her movies. In fact, the actress has been nominated seven times at the Razzies, which recognize the worst in film each year, winning twice for her 2004 stinkfest Gigli. But, says J.Lo in the February issue of ELLE, her romantic comedies must be good... or else people wouldn't pay to see them, right?

“I think Maid in Manhattan and Monster-in-Law are very layered movies," she explains about two of her films that received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics, but still went on to earn decent receipts at the box office. "And that’s why they’re so successful. People don’t like sh*tty romantic comedies. Nothing that’s sh*tty is going to make $100 million.”

Of course, Jennifer should take note: While they both came close, neither Maid in Manhattan nor Monster-in-Law actually cracked the $100 million mark at the domestic box office.

And funny that she skips over duds like Shall We Dance?, Jersey Girl and the above-mentioned Gigli, all of which were apparently not as layered as Monster-in-Law.

Speaking of J.Lo's rom-coms, the actress' next big screen go-round is in The Back-Up Plan, where she plays a single woman who undergoes in vitro fertilization, something Jennifer says she would never have considered.

“When it comes to family and relationships, I’m quite traditional," she tells ELLE . "Just because of the way I was raised. And I also believe in God and I have a lot of faith in that, so I just felt like you don’t mess with things like that. And I guess deep down I really felt like either this is not going to happen for me or it is. You know what I mean? And if it is, it will. And if it’s not, it’s not going to.”
