John Mayer Says Horrible 'Playboy' Interview Forced Him to Adulthood

Remember back in 2010, when John Mayer sat down with Playboy and Rolling Stone and called Jessica Simpson "sexual napalm" and then waxed poetic about his pornography obsession?

Yes, us too. And if you've noticed that John has been out of commission lately, he told Ellen DeGeneres today that those choice interviews were the central reason why.

"I did a couple of really dumb interviews and it woke me up," he told Ellen. "I lost my head for a little while. I lost touch and I didn’t want to ask for directions."

John goes on to say that he needed to be "33 and 34 instead of 28 for the fourth year" and escape to a small town in Montana where he recorded his new album, Born and Raised, out on May 22. The experience "rocketed" him into adulthood saying he needed "a few years just to figure it out."

As for Born and Raised, he says it's his most "honest and cohesive" album to date, citing how getting out of the spotlight after two very high profile relationships, one with Jessica and the last with Jennifer Aniston, was the best thing he ever did.

"I live in Montana, in the middle of nowhere," he said. "It's really excellent... why not be happy after a while? You get to a certain age where you prepare yourself for happiness and sometimes you never actually remember to get happy. I remembered how to get happy."
