Katherine Heigl Pledges $1 Million to Help Animals

Katherine Heigl made a big announcement during a press conference in L.A. on Thursday that she would be pledging $1 million for animals in the city towards spay and neuter programs. The actress showed her love and support for animals, alongside her mother Nancy Heigl, as she posed for photos while holding an adorable puppy!

In association with the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, Katherine was helping to push a pet initiative to help control the pet population.

"What's happening is not only inhumane and morally reprehensible, it's economically irresponsible," Katherine said (via The Hollywood Reporter). "Killing is not a solution."

The JDHF will also support training and obedience programs like Learn to be a Best Friend, rescue organizations and "no kill shelters," promote pet adoption and transport programs to help move animals from shelters where they would be euthanized to humane societies.

Around 500,00 animals are sheltered and euthanized in California every year, which costs the state $250 million.

"Most people are unaware of what's happening," the Life as We Know It star said. "We can start to change the existing paradigm."
