With award season looming, Oscar buzz is circulating about upcoming films, and Mariah Carey is already being recognized for her work in Precious, a positive sign for award nods in the future. The five-time Grammy winner and chart-topping vocalist will receive the Breakthrough Performance Award at the 21st Annual Palm Springs International Film festival, Entertainment Tonight reports.

"We're delighted to be able to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to the extraordinary, very beautiful and versatile Mariah Carey, who, in a critically acclaimed role, completely transformed herself from a glamorous music icon to a forthright social worker for the role of Ms. Weiss in Precious," festival chairman Harold Matzner tells Entertainment Tonight.

Precious, currently in theaters, is based on the novel Push by Sapphire. The movie follows an overweight, illiterate teen (Gabourey Sidibe), pregnant with her second child, who is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes to change her life.

Mimi follows in the footsteps of previous leading ladies to receive the award including Jennifer Hudson, Marion Cotillard and Freida Pinto. All three actresses went on to win an Oscar for their performances.
