Capping off a month of competition that included a four-week reality show on TLC, 19-year-old Kirsten Haglund of Farmington Hills, Mich., was crowned Miss America at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

During the pageant, the blonde beauty stressed the need to bring attention to eating disorders among young women. Kirsten, a music student at the University of Cincinati, is also the second woman in her family to represent the great state of Michigan in the legendary pageant. Her grandmother, Iora Hunt, wore the Miss Michigan sash in the 1944 competition.

Kirsten was crowned by outgoing Miss America, Lauren Nelson of Oklahoma, in the first edition of the contest to be aired on TLC.
