When actor Johnathon Schaech was presented with the chance to star in his new film, Little Chenier, he had more than a few good reasons to join. Not the least of which was that the 38-year-old actor had recently broken up with his wife of five years, Christina Applegate.

“It appealed to my heart strings," he explains to OK!. "I felt like it was calling me to play this part. It was kind of weird how it worked.”

Johnathon was also surprisingly open when OK! brought up the topic of his reported recent smooching session with Christina at L.A. nightclub Les Deux. "She was the love of my life and it was great seeing her," he freely reveals to OK! before adding, "I don’t think there’s a future ahead of us.”

As for Johnathon's latest project, Little Chenier is the little movie that could, having already garnered several awards at recent film festivals. “It was a fantastic experience," he explains to OK! about shooting the film in and around the New Orleans area. "It was very still. It’s a lazier mentality than I’m used to, coming from New York and Los Angeles. It was some of the most beautiful sites I’ve ever seen, deep inside the bayou.”

Not only did the landscape make filming easy, so did the local Cajun culture. Johnathon admits the folks in the region embraced the cast with open arms. “The Cajun people were making us pots of gumbo. They would treat us to an incredible feast. The most giving loving people around.”

Now, though it seems, the movie’s taken on a new meaning in his life. “It was a life changing experience and that’s why we’re reaching out and telling people about this movie. It’s about a group of people who have been forgotten.”

At the Austin Film Festival, Johnathon got a huge compliment from one of those "forgotten" people. “Here’s the best quote you can get. At the Austin Film Festival, the whole cajun culture came out. And this one man straight out of the bayou walked over to me with eyes weld up and he said, ‘Son, you’re just as good as any of those Hollywood actors.' ”

He adds, “I didn’t have the heart to tell him I sort of am one of those Hollywood actors.”

As for his love life, Johnathon has given up on finding true love. Although the currently single guy seems to be still be nursing a broken heart, he tells OK! he'd be willing to get married and have kids if the right lady came along. But it seems that, for now at least, Little Chenier is his baby.
