The next time Paris Hilton tries to defend herself, she should try checking all the facts first.

Last week, OK! that only about 40 people showed up to a meet-and-greet with casting directors of her upcoming reality show, which focuses on the celebutante's search for a new BFF.

After the report started making its way around the Internet, Paris took to her MySpace blog to try to do some damage control, claiming that there were "NO open calls for the show" and that "every event is exclusive and hand-picked by invitation only... I didn't want my potential BFFs to have to wait in a long open call lines.”

How considerate of her! Or at least it would be if it were true. Sources confirm to OK! that these “invitation only” auditions were filled with auditioners “that did not sign up on the site.”

Those hopefuls that were fortunate enough to continue to a proper "audition" were given a card with the place and time — The Shoreham Hotel located in NYC. (What — why not a Hilton hotel?)

And with an even smaller group of people showing up at this second round of auditions, you'd think it wouldn't be too tough to keep things organized. But insiders tell OK! it was "pure chaos."

“Some people brought friends for support and they even ended up auditioning,” a witness tells OK! “It was so disorganized, all there was was a sign-up sheet with a waiver.”

What kind of questions were on this waiver?

• What makes you think you should be Paris' BFF?

• If Paris was getting all the spotlight and paparazzi were only taking pics of her and not you, what would you do?

• What's your signature look?

• In your group of friends, are you the leader or the follower and why?

If you think you've got what it takes to be the next Nicole Richie, look out for the nearest "invite-only" event in your neighborhood.
