Ben Affleck wouldn’t make a good bachelor like fellow movie stars George Clooney, Bradley Cooper or Leonardo DiCaprio.

“My family is the most important thing in my life, and I think that’s probably the same for anybody,” the Argo director and star, 40, says this week at the National Board of Review Awards Gala in NYC, where he is honored. “It’s a wonderful thing.”

Still, he is not fully focused in raising his brood. Wife Jennifer Garner, whom he wed in 2005, is a hands-on mom to Violet, 7, Seraphina, 4, and Samuel, 10 months.

“That doesn’t mean that you can’t then do other stuff in your life,” he says. “In fact, having a family makes whatever achievements you’re able to have that much richer.”

No doubt, it keeps life’s ups and downs in perspective.

While Ben received an Oscar snub in the best director category Thursday morning, he collected the accolade at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards that evening.

“If it was just me, I’d go home sort of alone and say ‘oh wow, something goofy happened at work.’ I like to share it with the people I love.”

In fact, he hopes fatherhood brings a new dimension to his career.

“I think anytime you become a richer person, you have more substance, and it makes you more as a filmmaker. I hope that happens to me, with my family, but you never know.”
