The third time was the charm for Meryl Streep, who took home Oscar No. 3 Sunday at the Academy Awards for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

The actress, 62, who has been nominated a whopping 17 times, received her last Oscar in 1982 for Sophie’s Choice and her first in 1979 for Kramer Vs. Kramer.

Like the iconic British prime minster, who is mom to twins Mark and Carol, Best Actress winner Meryl has parented throughout her career.

How did she relate to her as a mom?

“Well, I have an inkling of the size of the day that she fulfilled,” Meryl tells me. “I looked at her daily calendar, and I tried to imagine that. I’m a mother, and I work in spurts throughout my career, so I’d work for four or five months, and then not, so I was home a lot. So I tried to imagine 11 ½ years of this kind of… she was unhappy if there were ten minutes of free time anywhere in her day. That was wasted. Wasted time. I imagined trying to be in the lives of your children to the degree that I try to be in their lives laughs, and I think it would have been very difficult.”

“I did not meet her, but I did see her once at my daughter’s university, at Northwestern, we went to see her lecture, and that made an indelible impression on me in 2001 or 2002. I can’t remember!”
