Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart Drama Compared to British Royal Family

Kristen Stewart's affair with director Rupert Sanders and subsequent breakup with Robert Pattinson has had everyone talking over the past few weeks.

And now, in another awkward interview, the Twilight star says that he believes America has been gripped by the infidelity drama because they are desperate to have their own monarchy.

Robert appeared on TimesTalk with Cosmopolis director David Cronenberg when he made the comment to moderator David Carr.

"I think it's because America really wants to have a royal family," the British actor said about the intense interest in his personal life.

"You want to have a democratic royal family. It's a meritocratic version of it, sort of, actually, no it's not at all."

Carr then interjected and said, "So if you and Kristen have trouble, it's like Charles and Di having trouble."

The audience didn't like the question and booed which made Robert and David laugh uncomfortably.

"I wasn't really going there, just so you now," Carr said.

Robert then added that he "wouldn't go that far" regarding being compared to Charles and Diana.

Prince Charles's 15-year marriage to the late Princess of Wales was mired over allegations that the heir to the throne had a long-lasting affair with Camilla Parker Bowles during the royal union.

Princes William and Harry's parents divorced in 1996 and Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Camilla and Charles finally tied the knot in 2005.
