Roman Polanski's a Free Man

Roman Polanski will not be sent by Switzerland to the United States, which means he is now a free man.

The Ministry of Justice announced Monday that Roman is free, CNN reports.

Roman was arrested in Switzerland last year after fleeing to Europe before receiving his sentencing after pleading guilty in L.A. to  having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

He was arrested in Switzerland last year and had been fighting extradition since then.

"It's not about qualifying the crime. That is not our job," Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said. "It's also not about deciding over guilt or innocence."

The American request was rejected by the Swiss because legal records required by Switzerland were not supplied by the U.S., she explained. Also, Roman had a reasonable right to believe he would not be arrested if he visited the country.

Although U.S. prosecutors can't apply to Switzerland again to have Roman sent there, she said, they could apply to other countries to have him detained and extradited.

Since 1978, Roman has been a fugitive and before his arrest was living in France.
