The star of Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys sat down with OK! recently to talk about her red carpet style, life and keeping in shape.

What is it about the clothing of the 1940s that you like?

You feel like a lady, but also a strong woman. She brings home the bacon and can fry it up in a pan! She’s in touch with her femininity and yet is strong in the workplace.

Can you tell a lot about a person by what they wear?

What you wear is a reflection of how you would like the world to see you and I think it should be a reflection of how you feel on the inside. I think people shouldn’t necessarily follow trends but reflect on what you want to portray about yourself.

What fills your closet these days?

If you saw my closet you would die laughing. It’s all over the place. I need an organizer really bad and I don’t have enough space. It’s very unorganized right now, but I’m working on it.

Whose style do you admire?

I think Eva Mendes always looks fashionable and very sexy. She always wears something high-fashion but look comfortable. She makes it look easy.

How about when you are on a red carpet?

Red carpet for me is really about reflecting who I am but also I believe you can play characters. It’s like ‘I’m going to be the movie star tonight’ or I’m going to be the vixen or I’m going to be the ingénue. It depends on what you’re feeling, what event you’re going to, and for me there’s never one look for a red carpet.

Do you like walking the red carpet?

There is so much scrutiny today so there is a bit of stress. It’s made me more aware and as a result I take more time getting ready for an event.

What do you do to stay in such great shape?

I’m the kind of girl that gets bored easily so I go from thing to thing. Right now I’m doing Barry’s Boot Camp.

Does dating football star Adewale Ogunleye keep you motivated?

He’s very good inspiration. It’s my job to keep my body in shape too, but they’re like really serious about keeping a certain body fat percentage, so he definitely is motivating.

What kinds of foods do you eat? Do you eat fairly healthy?

My mother got really sick when I was 5, and she cured herself with a diet that similar to a macrobiotic diet., so I was raised to be conscious of the effects of food on the body. As a result, I’ll go through phases of being vegan or I’ll try a raw-food cleanse.

What are you grateful for these day?

I have so much to be grateful for. First of all, my health. I’m grateful that I can pay the bills and do what I love. I’m grateful for the health and happiness for my family and friends, for just this day. It could be very simple. It doesn’t have to be anything deep.
