Sean Penn Says 'Tree of Life' Emotion on Script Didn't Translate on Screen

Sean Penn isn't pleased with how his recent film, Tree of Life, ended up looking on screen.

"I didn't at all find on the screen the emotion of the script, which is the most magnificent one that I've ever read," Sean told French newspaper Le Figaro (via New York Daily News) about the final cut of Terrence Malick's film. "A clearer and more conventional narrative would have helped the film without, in my opinion, lessening its beauty and its impact."

And Sean doesn't think his role as the protagonist helped.

"Frankly, I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing there and what I was supposed to add in that context," he said. "What's more, Terry himself never managed to explain it to me clearly."

So Sean has some advice for those are are considering seeing his film.

"It's a film I recommend on the condition that one go only without preconceptions," he said. "It's up to each to find a personal emotional or spiritual connection. Those that reach this generally leave very moved."
