When Sheryl Crow blogged about saving the environment by using one square of toilet paper per bathroom visit, she drew the ire of former deputy chief of staff Karl Rove. Earlier this year, she got into a heated argument with him about climate change.

“Thank God for the toilet tissue incident, because it got people talking about global warming in a monstrous way,” Sheryl, 45, says at the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Salute to Women In Sports Awards Gala held at NYC’s Waldorf-Astoria.

“Even though I feel like it was a manipulation, it was a knee-jerk reaction from the establishment because of the embarrassment for Karl Rove. They took something completely out of context in order to make me look ridiculous, but in hindsight it got everyone talking about global warming. Now we see people are starting to educate themselves on something that a lot of people were in denial about. However we get there … as long as we get there.”
