NEWSSUNDAY: IN THE NEWS (AND MOVIES)

I hadn’t realized until I read today that it’s been ten years since comedian Chris Farley died. I don’t remember how many years ago it was when I started thinking of David Spade solo and not Farley’s sidekick. Maybe it was when he was in “Just Shoot Me,” or maybe it was when the I-still-don’t believe them rumors surfaced that he was dating Heather Locklear. In any case, ten years after Chris passed away and many years after “Tommy Boy” premiered I still quote his lnes from the film regularly. Being the clutz that I am, “That’s going to leave a mark” is a phrase I utter at least twice a week, just before each bump becomes evident or black and blue from walking into something or tripping over my own two feet starts to bruise. Another favorite of mine, since I’ve realized that things don’t cease to amaze me is, “Holy Shnykees!”
Not one I repeat as often, but another Spade/Farley exchange I find funny:
Chris Farley (Tommy): ... did you hear I finally graduated? David Spade (Richard): ... yeah, just a shade under a decade too, all right ... Chris Farley (Tommy): ... you know a lot of people go to college for 7 years ... David Spade (Richard): ... I know, they're called doctors ...
Maybe I like it because it sounds like something my parents said to me while I was in my fifth year of college.
In other movies…
I went to a midnight movie last night and couldn’t believe the huge line to enter the theater- thankfully not for the movie we were seeing. There were so many people lining up for the movies so lat I thought there must be some event but it turned out it was just the late showing of “I Am Legend,” the new Will Smith movie that broke the record for an opening day in December with nearly $30 million. There’s something about that Fresh Prince of Belair.
I went to see “Atonement.” Although it got seven Golden Globe nominations last week my friends and I agree, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. The acting was good, the cinematography was great, but I’m in no rush to see it again, or tell anyone else too. Extraordinarily I also saw “Gone Baby Gone” this week . I liked it better in reflection and more with each conversation I have about it. I think Ben Affleck’s found his groove behind the camera – and made a great choice putting his brother Casey in front of it. His performance was fantastic ;) xo
