This past summer a Ponzi poker scheme made headlines by roping in several A-list names like former Spiderman Tobey Maguire included! Apparently he played the card game in several underground poker games in 2007 and 2008.
As reported by TMZ, new court documents indicated he has agreed to pay over $80,000. The grand schemer, Bradley Ruderman, was arrested for taking tons of money from his clients. He filed for bankruptcy and then bankruptcy trustees turned the tables and suited Tobey as well as several other people in order to regain Bradley's gambling losses. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bradley currently sits in a Texas prison as the trustee of his company tries to track down $25 million dollars lost in the high end games. Other celebrities targeted in addition to Tobey were The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes, record label owner Cody Leibel and Welcome Back, Kotter star Gabe Kaplan. Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck were also linked with the poker games but they were not sued. Tobey allegedly won more than $300,000 in the games but according to the lawsuit, the bankruptcy judge declared the game unlicensed and the winnings were not legit since they came from Bradley's clients.
