Chadwick Boseman's Wife Tearfully Accepts His Golden Globe Win For 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom,' Says He Would 'Thank God': Watch

The late Chadwick Boseman was honored at the 2021 Golden Globes when he was awarded Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

His wife, Simone Ledward Boseman, accepted the award on his behalf and gave a tearful speech.

"He would thank God. He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices," she began. "He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you, 'You can,' that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history."

"I don’t have his words, but we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love, so thank you HFPA, for this opportunity to do exactly that. And, honey, you keep ’em coming. Thank you," Ledward Boseman concluded. 

Boseman beat out Anthony Hopkins (The Father), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Gary Oldman (Mank) and Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian) in the category, making him the first Black posthumous winner.

Boseman also made history as the first acting winner from a film that debuted on a streaming service in this category.

His first Golden Globes nomination came in 2019 for his role in 21 Bridges.

Boseman passed away on August 18, 2020, of colon cancer at the age of 43, but he did not make his diagnosis public.

"A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy," a statement from Boseman’s team read at the time. 

"It was the honor of his career to bring King T'Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time."  ⁣
