Actress Andie MacDowell has always been known for her megawatt smile, natural charm, and starring roles in films like Four Weddings and a Funeral. But beneath her bubbly personality is a woman who has overcome a painful childhood. In the latest issue of People magazine, the mother-of-three has opened up about her dark past. As it turns out, Andie’s natural charm comes from her southern roots. She hails from Gaffney, South Carolina.

Sadly, however, the model-turned-actress grew up in a broken home, raised by her mother Pauline Johnson, a music teacher, and dad Marion St. Pierre MacDowell, a lumber executive, who divorced when she was just 7 years old.

Her mother, who she primarily lived with, unfortunately suffered from alcoholism and frequently left Andie home alone. Despite that, Andie told People that “she always loved me.”

But tragically, Pauline died of a heart attack when Andie was 23. “I don’t have a lot of anger,” she said. “I have a lot of compassion.”

Years later, the star of the upcoming drama, Love After Love, has remained positive. The brunette beauty will turn 60 next month, and is the proud mother of three daughters—Margaret, 23, Rainey, 28, and Justin, 31—with ex-husband Paul Qualley.
