'Batwoman' Star Ruby Rose Shares Graphic Footage Of Her Emergency Spinal Surgery

Batwoman star Ruby Rose is recovering after invasive spinal surgery.  On Sunday, September 29, the actress posted a graphic video of the procedure on Instagram and spoke candidly about her on-set injuries, which left her at risk of paralysis.

In the three minute clip, surgeons worked diligent on Ruby, 33, who was on the table and under anesthesia. “Well that was fun,” she wrote in the caption.

Then the Orange Is The New Black alum launched into an explanation about her injuries. “To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck... A couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralyzed,” she wrote. “I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal cord. I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms.”

“Thank you Dr. Bray for everything you did and for allowing me to keep working and doing what I love,” she added. “I am forever in your debt.”

The Melbourne native also opened up about her decision to let cameras in to the operating room and film her when she was in such a vulnerable state. “And to anyone asking why I let them video it. Did you not watch that Grey’s Anatomy episode where they left a towel in a patient? “ she asked. “Also I wanted to see what happens when we go under.”

Batwoman the series is slated to premiere on the CW on October 6 and ahead of the premiere, Ruby gushed about her role as the titular lesbian character. "It's fun when you get to build a character from the ground up," she told ET in August. "It's nerve-racking when people already have an expectation of what that character looks like to them. So, it's like a double-edged sword. But I'm having so much fun with it."

Ruby also shared how she handles the pressure of stepping into such an important role in terms of LGBTQ representation. "I know it's enormous, it's groundbreaking," she explained. "It's ticking all these boxes that haven't been ticked before. But I kind of remove myself from that external idea of it. What it is beyond the show…When I go to work every morning, or every night… I'm reminded that this is a show that I wish existed when I was young. That gives me that extra purpose to go to work."
