On New Year’s Day, Bobbi Kristina Brown’s ex-fiancé, Nick Gordon, passed away. The 30-year-old suffered from an alleged drug overdose.

Jack Walker Jr., Nick’s brother, confirmed the devastating news to PEOPLE on Wednesday, January 1. “We are devastated by the loss of my beautiful brother,” Jack said in a statement. “He leaves a void in the hearts of my family and his friends. Nick’s battle in life was not an easy one. I will be forever grateful that my God afforded a small moment at the very end of Nick’s life, and I was able to hold his hand as he journeyed on.”
According to the Daily Mail, Nick suffered a number of a heart attacks before being rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at Altamonte Springs Hospital, where he eventually died. Nick’s brother shared the news with a heartbreaking Facebook post. “God, Why did I have to lose my brother on New Year’s?” he wrote at the time. “All I can do is cry.”
In a separate post, Jack highlighted his bond with his sibling. “S**t wasn’t supposed to go like this. You were my best friend and I never in a million years thought I’d be writing this for my ace. I was there through every step. We all love you no matter what and we’ll all stay strong for you. New Year’s didn’t have to start like this and you just told me you had to see me for New Year’s, but I’m blessed I got to talk to you last night. You will forever be my best friend. Nobody will ever take your place.”

As OK! readers might recall, Nick was found liable in the wrongful death case of Whitney Houston’s daughter three years ago. At the time, the 22-year-old was found unconscious and unresponsive with drugs in her system in the bathtub of the Georgia townhouse, which she shared with Nick in 2015.
In November 2016, a judge ordered that Nick pay $36 million to Bobbi’s estate.
During the court hearing, Bobbi Kristina’s father, Bobby Brown, explained that his daughter planned to go into the entertainment industry, just like her parents.
“She was an entertainer. If you were around her, all you would do was laugh. She told a lot of jokes,” the former New Editor member, 50, said of his daughter. “She was always the life of the party and anywhere she went. I know she had the talent to be successful.”
