PHOTOSDJ Khaled, YG & More To Pay Tribute To The Late Nipsey Hussle At The 62nd Grammy Awards
Nipsey Hussle’s life and work will be honored at the Grammys. The Recording Academy announced on Tuesday, January 21 that an all-star tribute is set to take place to honor the late rapper, 33, at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. Performers include: Kirk Franklin, DJ Khaled, John Legend, Meek Mill, Roddy Ricch, YG, and many more.
Grammy Awards executive producer, Ken Ehrlich, released a statement stating, “An activist, entrepreneur and rapper, Nipsey Hussle had a lasting impact on not just his community, but also the culture at large. There is no denying the influence he had, and his legacy will be felt for generations to come.”
Ken, 77, continued, “We are honored to bring together this amazing group of artists to celebrate Nipsey’s life and pay tribute to his many contributions to music. It’s sure to be a memorable performance.”
Nipsey, whose real name was Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was posthumously nominated for a few awards including Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Rack In The Middle” and Best Rap/Sung Performance for “Higher.”
The “Victory Lap” rapper was shot and killed on March 31, 2019, outside of his Marathon Clothing store in South Los Angeles.
At the time of the murder, Nipsey’s alleged killer, Eric Holder, fled the scene and a manhunt proceeded. Eric was arrested and taken into custody in Bellflower, California just two days after the killing on April 2.
On Tuesday, May 21, the Lost Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced that, Eric, who was accused of fatally shooting the “Dedication” rapper and wounding two others, was indicted on murder charges. Those charges including one count of murder, two counts each of attempted murder and assault with a firearm, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He faces life in prison if convicted.
Nipsey’s funeral and memorial service took place at the Staples Center on Thursday, April 7. Marsha Ambrosius, Stevie Wonder, Anthony Hamilton, and Jhene Aiko were just a few of many who performed. The “Last Time That I Checc’d” rapper left behind his longtime girlfriend, actress Lauren London and children Emani and Kross.
