Since her rekindled romance with Justin Bieber has evaporated once again, Selena Gomez has been focusing her energy on things like church…and buying wine. According to doctors, drinking wouldn’t be such a big deal, if the 25-year-old didn’t have a kidney transplant just last year. A mad dash to the liquor store might be considered normal, given all the drama that has surrounded Selena lately. But after Selena was caught purchasing a few bottles of wine at Target earlier this month, doctors have expressed concerns about her health as she also has lupus and underwent a kidney transplant last year.
“When we’re talking about lupus and a kidney transplant, avoiding alcohol would be critical for her to stay well.” NYC lupus expert and rheumatologist Dr. Robert Falafak (who doesn’t treat the star), told Life & Style recently.
He also added that, “alcohol can be deleterious in terms of potential interactions with some of the medications she probably takes. In addition, alcohol has some side effects, like stomach upsets, which could complicate things with bleeding in the stomach and could certainly make her lupus worse.”
He hasn’t been the only one expressing concern for Selena. Attune health rheumatologist Christine Lee (who also has not treated the singer) also told the publication that while drinking in moderation might be acceptable in some cases, it would be smart for the “Bad Liar” singer to play it safe.
According to an insider for the magazine, even Selena’s friends spoken out about the potential harm, telling Life & Style, “The more thought that Selena could be drinking has friends worried about her health and well-being.”
