Rap legend Eminem was “Not Afraid” at all to tell the world that he was officially 10 years sober over the weekend, as he shared a simple yet inspirational photo to commemorate just how far he’s come.
Holding a 10-year AA chip (which featured the traditional Alcoholics Anonymous triangle of unity, service and recovery, along with an X in the center) to the camera, Eminem shared the incredible photo with his followers on Sunday.
He simply captioned it "Celebrated my 10 years yesterday,” which earned him thousands of messages from his fans, many of whom wished him nothing but support. "That’s awesome!! Congratulations!!!,” one wrote.
Eminem (whose real name is Marshall Mathers) has been very candid in the past about the events that led him to getting sober, most notably when he accidentally overdosed back in 2007.
"I overdosed on pills, and I went into the hospital. I was close to 230 pounds. I'm not sure how I got so big, but I have ideas,” he told Men’s Journal back in 2015. "The coating on the Vicodin and the Valium I'd been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach, so to avoid a stomachache, I was constantly eating — and eating badly.”
"When I got out of rehab, I needed to lose weight, but I also needed to figure out a way to function sober. Unless I was blitzed out of my mind, I had trouble sleeping. So I started running. It gave me a natural endorphin high, but it also helped me sleep, so it was perfect.” The exercise regiment that he developed became so dangerous to where it actually injured him, but after a while, he was able to get ahold of it and turn it into something healthier.
He eventually entered rehab in 2008 and began the 12-step program that is the core of addiction recovery programs. On his latest album, Revival, the track “Arose” detailed him apologizing to his now 21-year-old duaghter Hailie for his near fatal overdose on methadone back in 2007. Good to see how far Eminem has come over the past ten years, and hopefully he’ll be able to keep moving forward!
