Rapper French Montana is using his money and platform for good. He recently joined Global Citizen’s Mass Bail Out effort and spoke out on his desire to aid prison reform. Read on for the latest.

Under a recent Instagram picture the “Unforgettable” rapper announced, “Today I’m joining the @massbailout - a historic effort to free women and children who are jailed simply because they’re too poor to afford bail.”

He continued, “Today I came home to the Bronx and posted bail for someone who should have never been caged in the first place.”

Finally he urged, “Poverty is not a crime. Pre-trial detention is the real threat to public safety.”

After posting bail for the unnamed woman, the Moroccan born rapper explained in an interview, “Just because you can’t afford to be out of jail doesn’t mean you should be in there. A lot of people lose their families, jobs, kids and all kinds of things for something that petty and we want to end that whole cash bail thing.”

French isn’t the only visible member of the rap world who’s committed to prison reform. Jay Z’s Peabody award-winning 2017 docuseries TIME: The Kalief Browder Story highlighted the the tragic case of the young man who was forced to spend 3 years at Rikers Island, for a crime he didn’t commit because his family couldn’t afford bail. Kalief died by suicide at 22 — just two years after his release from prison.
