Meghan Markle entertained a very special guest at her royal residence. On November 12, the Duchess of Sussex had Hillary Clinton over to Frogmore Cottage for the first time. The 2016 Presidential candidate recently gushed about Meghan, 38, and claimed that the criticism and backlash she has received from British tabloids is “heartbreaking and wrong.”
The ladies chatted about a letter that the Duchess sent Hillary’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, when she was 11. In the letter, Meghan demanded for the removal of a “sexist” dishwashing soap advertisement. “Both women have a lot of admiration for each other and it was a very sweet, warm meeting,” a source said of their meeting. “They are mutual fangirls!”
Prince Harry and baby Archie also joined Meghan and Hillary, 72. The former secretary of state got some cuddles with the six-month-old, and chatted about her grandson Jasper, who was born in July.
Days before the news broke about the secret get-together, Hillary raved about Meghan while discussing her recent battles with British tabloids. “Oh my God, I want to hug her!” she told Emma Barnett on November 12. “I feel as a mother, I just want to put my arms around her. I want to tell her to hang in there, don’t let those bad guys get you down. Keep going, do what you think is right.”
The grandmother of three also said that the former Suits actress deserves a break from all the backlash she’s received. “She has made her own way in the world,” Hilary continued. “Then she falls in love, and he falls in love with her, and everybody should be celebrating that because it is a true love story. You can just look at them and see that.”
She added, “You know, it’s not easy. And there are some techniques that can be learned along the way, some humor, some deflection, whatever, which I’m sure she will come to. But it is tough what she is going through. And I think she deserves a lot better.” Hillary is able to sympathize with Meghan, after spending decades in the spotlight, and knowing what it’s like to have your personal life on full display.
The Hard Choices author also revealed that she finds the criticism Meghan has faced “heartbreaking and wrong.” She claimed that she believes the scrutiny Meghan faces is a combination of sexism and racism. “It takes some getting used to having your every move scrutinized and analyzed and, frankly, things made up about,” Hillary said. “I really wish her and her husband the very best because they are struggling to have a life of meaning and integrity in their own terms — and that’s hard enough if you’re just walking around in today’s world, but if you’re on that big a platform it’s really difficult."
Despite Meghan’s constant battle with the British press, Hillary believes she will persevere. “She is an amazing young woman. She has an incredible life story.”
