Jennifer Aniston Reveals Her Mom’s Obsession With Looks Caused Her Own Insecurities

Jennifer Aniston is getting candid about what caused the complicated relationship between her and her late mother Nancy Dubrow.

However, the Friends actress did give her mom a little bit of credit. She admitted that she understood how Nancy’s own upbringing shaped her ideals. “Her parents were basically non-existent,” Jennifer said. “She was one of five sisters. She had this beauty and that’s how she was able to go out and make a living, modeling."

The 49-year-old revealed that her mom’s obsession with beauty took a toll on her own self-esteem. “It didn’t instill a lot of security in how I felt about my physical appearance, just because she was always telling me what to do and how to do it,” she said.

During a recent interview for ITV’s Lorraine, Jennifer revealed that Nancy was the source of most of her own insecurities growing up. “My mom was very, she was just consumed and concerned with her physical appearance,” she explained.

“It wasn’t her fault,” she added. “But the things she was able to teach me were things I wasn’t really that interested in and also I didn’t have what she had necessarily.”

“She’d say, ‘Put your eyes on if you’re going to the market,’” she recalled. “I’m like 13, so I really have to put my eyes on? Aren’t they there? It’s not a criticism about her, it’s just all she knew.”

Jennifer and her mother remained estranged until Nancy’s death in 2016. Last month, the actress credited therapy with helping her work through the loss. At a recent Hollywood Foreign Press Association event she said, “It takes a lot of therapy, but you do absolutely get over it.”
