It takes a lot for Kanye West to flash a smile, as he sported scowl faces at the Met Gala and Superbowl. But the rapper just couldn’t contain himself when he received an honorary degree from the School of Art Institute of Chicago on May 11.
Congratulations, Dr. West! The college dropout was all smiles when he accepted his doctorate.
Kanye said to a cheering crowd during his commencement speech, “I am a pop artist. So my medium is public opinion and the world is my canvas. 'I'm sorry' is something that you can use a lot. It gives you the opportunity to give your opinion. Apologize for it. And give your opinion again. People say, 'You should not be sorry for your opinions!'"
He continued, “I felt my nerves a bit, and I don't feel that feeling a lot. The nerves of humility and modesty when being honored. A humanization, a reality of being recognized. And all I thought as I sit here, kind of shaking a little bit is... I need to get rid of that feeling. I need to not be nervous." He even quipped, "This honor is going to make your lives easier. Two reasons: You don't have to defend me as much. And, I'm gonna make all of our lives easier."
The “Yeezus” singer ended the speech with, “When I was giving a lecture at Oxford, I brought up this school. When I went on that mission to create.... it would've been easier if I could've said, 'I have a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago.' Thank you."

Although wife Kim Kardashian missed the milestone because she was in Brazil promoting her clothing line, she gave a sweet shoutout to her hubby on Instagram! “Dr. Kanye West!!!!!!! I'm so proud of you baby & I know your mom would be so proud too!!!!” she captioned a photo of her beau in his cap and gown.
But of course, it wouldn’t be a Kanye West appearance without his signature scowl. There’s the Kanye we all know and love!
