Since 2010, Spirit Day has been held every Oct. 16 as a day to stand against the bullying of LGBTQ youth. Purple was chosen as the color to signify the day since it represents “spirit” on the LGBTQ rainbow flag.
In May, Cox became the first transgender person to cover Time. “The reality is I don’t represent the entire transgender community. There’s multiple experiences and multiple relationship to one’s identity and so it’s really about listening to individuals in terms of how the define themselves and describe themselves and to take people at their word,” she told Time in a behind-the-scenes video from her shoot.
