Leslie Jones Is Getting A Comedy Special Directed By The Creators Of ‘Game Of Thrones’

Leslie Jones, comedian extraordinaire, has a comedy special coming to Netflix next month! On December 19, the streaming giant announced that the Saturday Night Live alum’s comedy special will air on January 14. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, known for their work on the HBO hit series, Game Of Thrones, directed the standup special. Leslie, 52, is a longtime fan of the fantasy series, and jokingly called herself the “Mother of Dragons” in the teaser for the special, Leslie Jones: Time Machine.

“Comedian, actress and Emmy Award-nominated SNL alum, Leslie Jones, is all about having fun,” Netflix stated. “Through the years that fun has encompassed wild times, crazy experiences, celebrity encounters and a few awkward mishaps. Now older, and enlightened, the comedian imparts her hilarious wisdom on all ages. Strap in, because you’re headed on a wild side-splitting ride from young adulthood to the present with Leslie Jones.”

The Memphis native first announced the Netflix comedy special in August during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and shared that it would be filmed on September 10 in Washington, D.C. “I am actually a stand-up comic,” she said. “It’s great to be the actress and the sketch and all this stuff, but I’m actually a stand-up, hardcore.”

Leslie Jones: Time Machine is the Ghostbusters actress’ first major project since she left Saturday Night Live, which she announced on August 27. “Yes, it’s true I am leaving Saturday Night Live,” she wrote on Instagram, and went on to thank the network, writers, producers, and her costars for making SNL her “second home” for five years.

Leslie originally joined the NBC sketch show in 2014. Although she was originally hired as a writer and Featured Player, she became a Repertory Player for her hilarious appearances on the “Weekend Update” segments in 2016.

In August, David, 49, and D.B., 48, signed an exclusive deal with Netflix, according to Deadline. The showrunners were pursued by six different studios. Ultimately, they chose Netflix, where they will write, produce and direct new films and series for the streaming giant.  “We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said at the time. “They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”
