Megan Thee Stallion, 24, filed paperwork on July 10 to trademark “Hot Girl Summer,” Billboard.com confirmed on July 22. Coincidentally a fan asked her that day whether she would trademark the phrase and she responded, “Yes mam it’s been in the process ??.”

The phrase has been getting traction from Instagram captions and from brands using it for marketing, but Ayesha, 30, didn’t catch on.

“I had to ask somebody the other day, ‘What is hot girl summer?’ But apparently there’s this song that’s right now by a girl group called City Girls and I guess they want the nation to embrace – all the women, and men – that way of being,” Ayesha told ABC in an interview on July 17. “It’s being your best self in your own skin and living your best life but in the summer,” she hesitantly responded when asked to define the popular phrase.”

If Megan Thee Stallion wins her case then the trademark would specifically cover “Hot Girl Summer” being marketed on hoodies, tee shirts, sportswear, and other apparel.
