Spoilers ahead! For decades, fans have wondered if Rose (Kate Winslet) could have saved Jack’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) life in the film Titanic. He made just one attempt to get up on the door she was floating on, and then gave up and sank back into the deep dark sea for all eternity. “Whether or not he could’ve been successful, I would’ve tried more than once,” Neil told the Huffington Post of Jack’s singular attempt to fit on Rose’s door.

“You try once. ‘Oh, this is not gonna work. I will just freeze to death in the water.’ No, excuse me. No!” the StarTalk host argued.

“The survival instinct is way stronger than that in everybody, especially in that character. He’s a survivor, right? He gets through. He gets by,” Neil said, explaining that Jack would have done everything he could have to survive the ship’s sinking.

“And I’ll tell you this, if that character was Matt Damon from The Martian, he would’ve made an outboard motor and saved everybody. This is how science can help you!” Neil exclaimed.

Despite the fact that Rose lets Jack go at the end of the Titanic, forever fated to an icy blue, watery grave, luckily, the actors who played them are still very much alive and well, and even close friends to this day.

In fact, Kate, Leo, and Billy Zane recently reunited at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation charity auction in St. Tropez, France. “Gangs back together. Now we’re saving icebergs. Go figure,” Billy captioned this priceless pic.
