Nothing is as it appears to be on television. At least that's what Nina Dobrev felt when she starred on the CW's The Vampire Diaries. Although she and costar Paul Wesley acted like they were in love on the hit vampire romance series, it turns out that the two actually hated each other while filming.
Nina, 30, opened up about the show on an episode of former TVD costars Candice King and Kayla Ewell’s “Directionally Challenged” podcast.
"Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley,” the actress said.
The Fam star added, "I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?’ Everyone thought that we had such good chemistry."
"I realize now that there’s a fine line between love and hate and we despised each other so much that it read as love but...We really just didn’t get along the first five months of shooting," Nina explained.
Nina portrayed the dual roles of the human Elena Gilbert and the vampire Katherine Pierce from the series' inception in 2009 until 2015. She left the drama at the end of season six.
Paul, 36, played the dark, brooding vamp Stefan Salvatore from 2009 until the show's end in 2017. Elena and Stefan's relationship on the show lasted until season four. Their romance fizzled out when Elena started dating Stefan's brother Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder).
