During the “Weekend Update” segment on SNL, Pete gave his first impressions on some candidates across the country who are running for office in the midterm elections. When the screen showed a photo of Dan, who wears an eyepatch due to losing his eye during his time in Afghanistan, Pete said he looked like a “hitman from a porno.”

The 24-year-old continued, “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”

Pete has received lots of backlash in the wake of his comments. In particular, his castmate Kenan demanded Pete make an apology. Kenan was asked on the Today show whether his co-star crossed the line with his joke, and he responded, “It definitely seems it.”

Kenan continued, “My father’s a veteran, Vietnam, and I personally would never necessarily go there, but it’s tough when you’re fishing for jokes — like that’s how standups feel like there’s no real filters out there in the world when they’re trying to go for a great joke or whatever, and we try to respect that but at the same time, when you miss the mark, you’re offending people so you have to really be a little more aware, in my opinion.”

The war veteran himself told sources in a video that he does not believe Pete should issue an apology despite the backlash.  “I want us to get away from this culture where we demand apologies every time someone misspeaks. I think that would be very healthy for our nation to go in that direction. We don’t need to be outwardly outraged. I don’t need to demand apologies from them. They can do whatever they want, you know. They are feeling the heat from around the country right now, and that’s fine,” Dan said.

Do you think Pete should give a public apology? Sound off in the comments!
