"The Duke of Edinburgh (traveled) from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition," Buckingham Palace said in a statement released on December 20, adding that "The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor."

The palace also stated that Philip was not rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, and is expected to stay there for several days.  According to reports, Philip “doesn’t want any fuss” over his illness and for the royal family to carry on with their Christmastime traditions. The Duke of Edinburgh’s last public appearance was in May 2019 at Lady Gabriella Windsor’s wedding in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle alongside his wife of 73 years.
