Oh no! Just months after announcing he’d soon be retiring from his royal duties, Prince Philip has been taken to the hospital after falling ill. According to a royal spokesman, Queen Elizabeth’s husband has an infection. Just yesterday, the Prince, 96, attended the Royal Ascot races with his wife. Today, he was supposed to join her as she delivered the State Opening at Parliament. However, the Prince is instead recovering from his sudden health crisis. “The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition,” the spokesman told People magazine in a statement.

Despite his hospitalization, the spokesman says the Prince is in “good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot.”

The Queen’s son Prince Charles is joining her at Parliament instead.

As usual, royal duties must come first for the Queen, who will also attend the Royal Ascot “as planned this afternoon” while “being kept informed” about her husband’s condition.
