Amid rumors Maroon 5 will perform at the Super Bowl LIII Halftime show, sources have exclusively revealed to Us Weekly that Rihanna was offered the gig first but turned it down to support Colin Kaepernick. Scroll down for more details.
Colin was the first player in the National Football League to kneel during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial inequality. As a result of the controversy, he has remained a free agent since leaving the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.
According to sources, “The NFL and CBS really wanted Rihanna to be next year’s performer in Atlanta."
The source continued to say, “They offered it to her, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy. She doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance.” The league has tried to keep players from kneeling or carrying out other protests during the anthem.
The Unapologetic singer has been extremely vocal about the importance of racial inclusivity in the past. Both her beauty line Fenty Beauty and her lingerie line Savage X Fenty have pointedly been aimed at including women of all shapes, sizes, and colors.
Although the opportunity would be huge for the Barbadian singer, who is rumored to be releasing new music, she fully “supports Colin Kaepernick,” according to the source. The “Work” singer admitted that fans have been harassing her for new music since her last album Anti debuted in 2016.
